New for 1999: It's been
more than a decade since Chevrolet brought out a new full-size truck.
The 1999 model year ushers
in the next-generation pickup with all-new styling, features, and
even a new name for GM's best-selling
vehicle. A lineup of new engines is also available for
the new truck. The Silverado
is described by the automaker as "Bigger, faster, stronger, and
smarter." The Silverado 2500
is designed for heavier-duty applications than the Silverado 1500.
It comes with standard V8 power
and higher gross weight ratingsóup to 8,600 pounds.
History: While Chevy's
first factory-built pickup was introduced in 1930 (before that, third
parties sold pickup bodies
separately), the last generation debuted in 1988. For the last 15
years, America's second-best-selling
new motor vehicle has been the Chevy full-size pickup.
Trim Details: The 1999
Chevrolet Silverado 2500 full-size pickup is available in a number
of trims: Regular Cab 2WD and 4WD; Extended Cab short bed and long
bed, 2WD and 4WD; and base, LS, and LT trims. Safety features include
dual airbags, daytime running lights and an anti-lock brake system
(ABS). The standard power plant on the Silverado 2500s with a GVWR
below 8,600 pounds is a 5.3-liter V8 engine that produces 270 horsepower.
A 300-horsepower 6.0-liter V8 is standard on trims with a GVWR of
8,600 pounds and above. A 6.5-liter turbodiesel that generates a
whopping 440 lb-ft of torque at only 1800 rpm will also be available
later in the model year. Standard equipment includes an AM/FM stereo, a
tilt steering wheel, intermittent wipers, a theft-deterrent system
and a third door that allows easy access to the rear passenger area.
The LS adds color-keyed carpeting, air conditioning, power windows
and door locks, remote keyless entry and an upgrades stereo system with
CD player. The new truck can also be lavishly equipped as an LT that
features power-adjustable heated bucket seats, leather trim, a cassette
and CD player, aluminum wheels and a 4-speed automatic transmission. |
