New for 1999: It's been
more than a decade since Chevrolet introduced a new full-size truck.
The 1999 model year ushers
in the next-generation pickup with all-new styling, features, and
even a new name for GM's best-selling
vehicle. Driven by more powerful engines, Silverado is
described by the automaker
as "Bigger, faster, stronger, and smarter."
History: While Chevy's
first factory-built pickup was introduced in 1930 (before that, third
parties sold pickup bodies
separately), the last generation debuted in 1988. For the last 15
years America's second-best-selling
vehicle has been the Chevy full-size pickup.
Trim Details: The 1999
Chevrolet Silverado 1500 full-size pickup truck is available
in a number of trims including combinations of regular cab and extended
cab; 2WD or 4WD; short and long bed; standard and Sportside beds;
and base, LS, and LT decor. Safety features include dual airbags,
an anti-lock brake system (ABS) and daytime running lights. The standard
engine on the 1500 is a 4.3-liter V6 that produces 200 horsepower.
Also available are a 255-horsepower 4.8-liter V8 and a high-torque
270-horsepower 5.3-liter V8. Standard equipment includes an AM/FM
stereo, a tilt steering wheel, intermittent wipers, a theft-deterrent system,
and a third door that allows easy access to the rear passenger area.
The LS adds color-keyed carpeting, air conditioning, power windows
and door locks, remote keyless entry and an upgrades stereo system
with CD player. The new truck can also be lavishly equipped as an LT that
features power-adjustable heated bucket seats, leather trim, a cassette
and CD player, aluminum wheels and a 4-speed automatic transmission. |
